Models become a household name and then fade into history unless they get into other aspects of the business or keep up some semblance of a career so that they are not replaced by younger up and comers vying for their spot.
Many of the models we recognize were working for years and years in relative obscurity until a particularly lucky contract was signed with some major designer, or they appeared, as in the fantasies of many models, on the cover of one of the various fashion magazines that we have come to recognize as being a benchmark in the career of any successful model.
Models do Vogue, and become a sensation. They do People, and usually want to sue them later. But such is life for the hard working rich and famous models we all know and love. There are perks, and there are trade-offs.
